The tradition of the wedding cake dates back thousands of years to Ancient Rome, where guests would break a loaf of bread over the bride’s head as a symbol of fertility, prosperity and good fortune.

During medieval times in Britain, small sweet buns and cakes were stacked high between the bride and groom. It was believed that if the couple could successfully kiss over the towering pile without knocking it down, they would enjoy a prosperous and happy marriage.
